MANCHESTER, England - Overcoming a poor history can be tough in sports. Keeping a strong team consistently on top might be even harder.

Malcolm Glazer and his sons pushed aside a history of franchise mediocrity when their
Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the 2003 Super Bowl, a first in the team's 30-year history.

But on Sunday, Joel and Bryan Glazer got a firsthand look at how hard it will be for their Manchester United team to recapture the English soccer league title in a competition it had dominated before they came along.

This lesson: History doesn't win anything.

Glazer put his sons on the board of directors to run the finances of United — one of the most famous soccer clubs in the world — after buying up most of the shares last year.

He then took the club off the stock market, angering many United fans by borrowing money to purchase the Red Devils and effectively put a profitable club heavily into debt.

Thousands of anti-Glazer fans still boycott games, but the 76,000-capacity Old Trafford sells out week after week.

LA QUINTA, Calif. - Stephen Ames took the big bucks in his first Skins Game. Ames rolled in a 3-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole Sunday for $270,000 that gave him the championship with a total of $590,000.

"I forgot about the golf swing and just started playing golf," Ames said. "I made some nice putts and hit some good shots where I made some skins early on."

Five-time champion Fred Couples finished second with $385,000. John Daly won one skin worth $25,000 and ruined his chance at the $270,000 still up for grabs when he drove into a fairway bunker on the third playoff hole.

Fred Funk, who wore a pink skirt on one hole last year then went on to laugh all the way to the bank with $925,000 and the title, was shut out in his second trip to the Skins.

Couples and Funk were eliminated on the second playoff hole, when Ames and Daly each had birdies.

Couples, who was making his 13th appearance and is known as "King of the Skins," ran his career earnings in the event to $3.9 million. Although he didn't win this time, Couples played the best golf of the foursome, with 10 birdies and an eagle over 20 holes.

EAST RUTHERFORD, United States (AFP) -
New Jersey Nets forward Clifford Robinson underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, the National Basketball Association club announced.

The 39-year-old veteran of 18 NBA seasons averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in seven games this season but missed the Nets' past four games due to soreness in the knee.

No timetable was given for the possible return of Robinson, whose 1,337 career games rank seventh in NBA history. Robinson has career averages of 14.5 points and 4.6 rebounds a game.

The Nets obtained Robinson from Golden State in February of 2005. Robinson started 13 games last season, averaging 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 23.3 minutes. He shot 43 percent from the field, including 34 percent of 3-pointers.

On May 12, Robinson was found to have violated terms of the NBA's anti-drug program and was suspended five games. He missed the last three games of the Nets' loss to eventual NBA champion Miami in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Robinson also was suspended five games for violating the anti-drug policy in 2005 with Golden State just before being traded to the Nets.

PARIS - Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro won the Golden Ball award Monday, the first defender in 10 years selected as Europe's best player.

Cannavaro, who played for Juventus last season but moved to Real Madrid after helping Italy win the World Cup, got 173 points in France Football magazine's annual poll of 52 journalists from around the world. Juventus goalie Gianluigi Buffon was second with 124 points, followed by Arsenal striker Thierry Henry with 121.

FC Barcelona playmaker Ronaldinho, who won the award last year, was fourth with 73 points. France's Zinedine Zidane was fifth with 71. Cannavaro is the third defender in 30 years to win — Matthias Sammer won the award in 1996 and Franz Beckenbauer in 1976.

He was also the fifth Italian to win, following Roberto Baggio (1993), Paolo Rossi (1982), Gianni Rivera (1969) and Argentine-born Omar Sivori (1961).

"This is a double honor," Cannavaro said. "It is given to the best player, and the fact I am a defender makes it even more special."
